The Port of Los Angeles has achieved a new milestone in green technology with the commencement of operations of the world's first hydrogen-powered rubber-tyred gantry crane. Developed by MITSUI E&S and PACECO with funding from the Japanese New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the H2-ZE RTG Transtainer Crane was put into operation at Yusen Terminals on 15th May. This pilot project, set to run for the next four years, aims to showcase the feasibility and benefits of using hydrogen as a power source in port operations. The crane is currently scheduled to operate for 16 hours per day, marking a significant shift towards sustainable energy practices in the maritime sector. By utilizing hydrogen fuel cells, this initiative not only reduces carbon emissions but also sets a precedent for integrating eco-friendly solutions in logistics and infrastructure.
