In July 2024, the US maritime transportation sector witnesses a groundbreaking moment as the first hydrogen-powered ferry, Sea Change, is launched in San Francisco Bay. Developed by SWITCH Maritime in California and built by All American Marine, this innovative vessel operates solely on hydrogen fuel cells, making it a pioneer in sustainable transportation. Unlike hybrid vessels, Sea Change emits only water vapor, with a unique system that turns part of it into drinkable water for onboard use. With a capacity of 75 passengers and a propulsion system consisting of a 600 kW electric motor, 360 kW fuel cells, and 100 kW Li-Ion battery storage, Sea Change offers a glimpse into the future of eco-friendly public transportation. Operated by Blue & Gold Fleet, the ferry will provide free transportation between Pier 41 and Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal during a six-month demonstration period. The project, supported by partners and a CARB grant, displays a commitment to integrating hydrogen and electric powertrain systems safely. Looking ahead, SWITCH Maritime aims to scale this technology to larger vessels accommodating 150 to 450 passengers, further promoting sustainable maritime solutions with 'drinkable emissions.'
