Key Ideas
  • The UK Labour Government is taking action to transition to greener transport by developing a zero emission HGV and coach infrastructure strategy.
  • A funding boost of £200 million is aimed at introducing hundreds of zero emission HGVs across the UK, with plans for further infrastructure development.
  • Plug-in vehicle grants are available for trucks, vans, motorcycles, and taxis, offering discounts based on weight and emissions criteria.
  • Despite the focus on electric vehicles, some experts are optimistic about the potential development of hydrogen vehicles for long-haul transport in the future.
The UK Government, under the new Labour administration, is making strides towards promoting greener and cleaner forms of transport by focusing on zero emission heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and coaches. In 2023, a call for evidence was launched to assess the current and future supply, uptake, and use of such vehicles across the country. The Government announced plans to publish a zero emission HGV and coach infrastructure strategy in 2024, supported by a £200 million funding initiative. Two new 37-tonne fully-electric HGVs have already been integrated into Amazon's delivery fleet. The Department for Transport is investing in the introduction of more zero emission HGVs through a demonstrator programme. Additionally, plug-in vehicle grants are available for various vehicle types, providing discounts based on weight and emissions criteria. While the focus is mainly on electric vehicles, there is optimism among experts for the development of hydrogen vehicles for long-haul transport. Although the UK currently faces challenges in hydrogen refueling infrastructure, technological advancements are expected to drive progress in decarbonizing the transportation sector.
