West Virginia is set to embrace a clean hydrogen energy future with the development of the Morgantown-based Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) over the next 10 years. This initiative, a partnership between various stakeholders, is dedicated to building a safe and sustainable clean hydrogen ecosystem in the West Virginia-Pennsylvania-Ohio region. With a substantial allocation of funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, ARCH2 is poised to receive up to $925 million to support its projects. The hub will progress through four phases, beginning with detailed planning and environmental reviews, followed by financing, permitting, construction, and operations. One of the key projects under ARCH2 involves Hope Gas and Hog Lick Aggregates in Morgantown and Fairmont, respectively, focusing on producing clean hydrogen for blending in natural gas systems and establishing fuel services depots for hydrogen-powered transportation. These endeavors align with the hub's goals of emissions reduction, job creation, energy security, and community benefits, in adherence to the White House Justice40 initiative. Aligned with similar hubs across the U.S., ARCH2 aims to create a national clean hydrogen network that addresses key objectives while benefiting disadvantaged communities.
