ZeroAvia Receives $4.2M FAA Grant for Electric Propulsion Innovation
Key Ideas
  • ZeroAvia has been awarded $4.2 million by the FAA to advance its electric propulsion system for aviation, bringing it closer to validation and commercial deployment.
  • The grant will support the design, fabrication, and testing of ZeroAvia's proprietary electric motor and inverter in Everett, WA.
  • ZeroAvia's research complements their work on High Temperature PEM fuel cells in the UK to enable hydrogen-electric engines for aircraft.
  • The company's CEO, Val Miftakhov, appreciates the FAA's investment in hydrogen and electric propulsion, aligning with their vision of a cleaner aviation future.
ZeroAvia has secured a $4.2 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under the Fueling Aviation’s Sustainable Transition discretionary grant program. The funding aims to propel ZeroAvia's electric propulsion system, designed for 2-5 megawatt powertrain applications, closer to validation and integration with their High Temperature PEM fuel cell technology. The research and development activities will be conducted in ZeroAvia's center of excellence in Everett, WA, focusing on advancing their electric motor and inverter for future certification and commercial use. The project will leverage ZeroAvia's HyperCore motor and silicon-carbide inverters, previously tested at the same facility, to enhance their electric propulsion capabilities. This initiative aligns with ZeroAvia's efforts in the UK to develop High Temperature PEM fuel cells for hydrogen-electric engines in medium-sized aircraft. Val Miftakhov, the Founder and CEO of ZeroAvia, expressed gratitude for the FAA's support in advancing hydrogen and electric propulsion technologies for cleaner aviation. He highlighted the importance of the grant in promoting sustainable practices and reducing carbon emissions in the industry. The award reflects the commitment of both ZeroAvia and the FAA towards a greener future for aviation, showcasing a shared vision for decarbonization and innovation in the sector.
