ATCO Australia has achieved a milestone by blending up to 10% hydrogen into Western Australia's main gas distribution network, serving around 3,000 homes. The Clean Energy Innovation Hub (CEIH) at ATCO's Jandakot Operations Centre showcases the production of renewable hydrogen through electrolysis using solar panels on-site. This initiative aligns with the WA Government's goal to introduce hydrogen into the gas network by 2022. ATCO's focus on safety and reliability in the hydrogen blending process has been paramount, with no impact on residential gas appliances. The company is also exploring the use of 100% hydrogen appliances in a demonstration hybrid home. CEO John Ivulich highlights the significance of amending the National Gas Law and Rules to incorporate hydrogen, biomethane, and other renewable gases into the regulatory framework, supporting emissions reduction in the energy sector. The project signifies a positive step towards utilizing renewable gases in Australia's energy transition.
