Chancellor Rachel Reeves has given the green light for the construction of the UK's largest hydrogen production facility in Bradford, as part of the Bradford Low Carbon Hydrogen project. This initiative, a redevelopment of a former gas storage site in the city, is one of 11 green hydrogen projects across the UK set to benefit from £2bn in government funding. The project has already received planning permission and is expected to generate up to 125 new jobs for Bradford. With the capacity to produce 12.5 tonnes of hydrogen daily, the facility aims to reduce emissions by removing around 800 diesel buses from West Yorkshire's roads each day. The joint venture between N-Gen and Hygen is crucial for the delivery of this project, with support from Bradford Council. Hydrogen, being a clean fuel that emits no carbon when burned, is a key player in decarbonising various sectors, including heavy transport like HGVs and buses, as well as in industrial processes. The project not only ensures a sustainable future for Bradford's Birkshall site but also contributes to the city's efforts in achieving its climate change objectives, while also attracting investment and creating green jobs. Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe expressed her satisfaction with the investment, emphasizing the positive impact the Bradford Low Carbon Hydrogen program will have on Bradford's economy and environmental sustainability. Gareth Mills, managing director at N-Gen Energy, and Jamie Burns, director at Hygen Energy, also welcomed the Chancellor's commitment to the project, highlighting its importance and the collaboration with the government in making it a reality.
