A recent breakthrough in the form of an interactive map has shed light on the unexpected abundance of hydrogen reserves beneath the United States. Previously, it was perceived that naturally occurring hydrogen was insufficient for energy utilization. The map, developed by US Geological Survey (USGS) geologists Geoff Ellis and Sarah Gelman, showcases regions where hydrogen gas extraction is most feasible, with darker hues indicating higher prospects. Sarah Ryker from USGS expressed excitement over the findings, emphasizing the map's revelation that numerous parts of the US harbor substantial subsurface hydrogen resources. The estimated energy content of recoverable hydrogen surpasses the energy in all proven natural gas reserves globally, signifying a groundbreaking discovery in energy potential. While the map delineates favorable conditions in over 30 states, uncertainties persist regarding extraction depth, offshore locations, and economic feasibility.
