bp and Iberdrola España have embarked on the construction of Spain's largest green hydrogen plant in Castellón, representing a significant step towards industrial decarbonisation. The project, with a capacity of 25MW, is set to create 500 jobs during construction, involving around 25 local companies. The initiative, scheduled for completion by the second half of 2026, includes the installation of electrolyzers to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis using renewable electricity sources. This undertaking, valued at over €70 million, is expected to produce 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen yearly, aiming to offset 23,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Additionally, the project aligns with EU requirements for green hydrogen production, ensuring environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the venture plans to collaborate with industries in the Valencian Community to integrate green hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas, fostering decarbonisation efforts. Through partnerships with Spanish firms like Imefy, the project also bolsters regional industrial growth, creating opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
