Damen and CMB.TECH Collaborate on Hydrogen-Powered Tugs for Green Port Operations
Key Ideas
  • CMB.TECH and Damen signed an agreement to develop four hydrogen-powered tugs using dual fuel hydrogen technology to reduce emissions significantly.
  • The vessels, ASD Tugs 2812 FF-H2, meet stringent environmental standards, featuring high-speed dual fuel hydrogen engines and modular storage systems for compressed hydrogen.
  • The tugs can switch between hydrogen and traditional fuel, promoting the decarbonization of port operations and creating demand for green hydrogen production.
CMB.TECH and Damen have entered into a collaboration agreement to build four hydrogen-powered tugs that will revolutionize port operations by significantly reducing emissions. These tugs will incorporate CMB.TECH's dual fuel hydrogen technology and have received approval for their innovative hydrogen solution. The vessels, known as ASD Tugs 2812 FF-H2, with a powerful 80-tonnes bollard pull, comply with the strictest environmental regulations such as IMO Tier III and EU Stage V standards. Equipped with four high-speed dual fuel hydrogen engines and modular storage systems for hydrogen, each tug can store up to 736kg of pressurized hydrogen. They are designed to prioritize hydrogen but can seamlessly switch to traditional fuel if necessary. This milestone in green maritime technology represents a crucial step towards decarbonizing port operations globally. Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH, emphasized the importance of these hydrogen tugs in reducing carbon emissions and fostering the growth of green hydrogen production. Additionally, the collaboration between Damen and CMB.TECH extends to previous projects like the development of Commissioning Service Operations Vessels (CSOV) powered by dual fuel hydrogen generator sets, showcasing their commitment to sustainable maritime solutions.
