Innovative Hydrogen-Powered ASD Tugs Receive Approval for Environmentally Friendly Operations
Key Ideas
- LR grants AiP to CMB.TECH and Damen for hydrogen-powered ASD Tugs 2812 FF-H2, meeting strict emissions standards.
- Tugs boast high-efficiency dual fuel hydrogen engines and modular storage for compressed hydrogen, ensuring safe operations.
- Flexibility is key as tugs can switch between hydrogen and traditional fuel, with a capacity of 160m3 for fuel holds.
- Collaboration between Damen and CMB.TECH marks a milestone in hydrogen-powered vessel development, underlined by a ceremony in Dubai.
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has recently granted approval in principle (AiP) to CMB.TECH and Damen for their innovative hydrogen solution to be installed on four new Damen ASD tugs. These hydrogen-powered ASD Tugs 2812 FF-H2, equipped with 80-tonnes bollard pull, are designed to meet the stringent IMO Tier III and EU Stage V emissions standards. The tugs will operate using four high-speed dual fuel hydrogen engines, aimed at minimizing NOx and CO2 emissions. To ensure safe storage, the vessels will be equipped with modular storage systems for compressed hydrogen, capable of holding up to 16 hydrogen bottles each, totaling 736kg of pressurized hydrogen at 350 bar. In addition to their hydrogen capabilities, the tugs can also run on traditional fuel if hydrogen is unavailable and can even operate solely on traditional fuel when necessary, with a total fuel hold capacity of 160m3. Damen and CMB.TECH's collaboration extends beyond this project, having previously worked together on the development of the Elevation Series vessels powered by dual fuel hydrogen generator sets. The approval and collaboration were celebrated at a ceremony held on May 23rd at Albwardy Damen in Sharjah during the 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention in Dubai, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of hydrogen-powered maritime technology.
