Tenaris Collaborates with Snam and Tenova for First Hydrogen Trial in Italian Steel Plant
Key Ideas
  • Tenaris, Snam, and Tenova collaborate on a six-month trial in Italy to use hydrogen in steel production, aiming to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries.
  • The project involves using on-site hydrogen production, a specially developed burner, and expertise from each company to lower CO2 emissions.
  • Tenaris aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2030 through the use of hydrogen as a green fuel in its industrial processes.
  • Snam's involvement includes providing an alkaline electrolysis system to produce hydrogen and supporting the industrial use of decarbonized hydrogen.
The first trial using hydrogen in a steel plant in Italy has been launched by Tenaris, Snam, and Tenova. This collaboration, expected to last six months, will evaluate the performance and reliability of hydrogen use in the steel industry and other hard-to-abate sectors. The trial, taking place at Tenaris's mill in Bergamo, Italy, will involve using on-site hydrogen production to fuel a newly developed burner in a reheating furnace. The goal is to lower CO2 emissions in manufacturing processes through the integration of hydrogen technology. Tenaris's president in Europe, Michele Della Briotta, highlighted the project's significance in verifying the feasibility of using hydrogen as a green fuel to reduce the company's carbon footprint. Tenova will contribute to the project by providing combustion systems expertise and hydrogen-fueled burners. Additionally, Snam will supply an alkaline electrolysis system for hydrogen production. The collaboration aims to pave the way for decarbonization in hard-to-abate industries by gradually replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen. Snam's broader efforts as a system operator also support industrial companies in decarbonizing their processes. The joint efforts of Tenaris, Tenova, Snam, and Techint Engineering & Construction signify a step towards sustainable industrial practices and reducing carbon emissions through hydrogen technology.
