Airbus has taken a significant step towards the development of hydrogen aircraft by signing a memorandum of understanding with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and a Japanese airport operator. The agreement is part of Airbus' 'Hydrogen Hub at Airports' program, which spans 14 countries. Japan, a country known for its pioneering work in hydrogen technology and government support, is a vital partner in this initiative. The partnership with Kawasaki, renowned for its cryogenic technology, will help in preparing the ecosystem for hydrogen integration at airports. The collaboration aims to conduct detailed studies on integrating the hydrogen supply chain and airport operations. Airbus foresees an initial requirement of a few tonnes of liquid hydrogen daily, eventually escalating to several hundred tonnes by 2050. The company expresses confidence in Japan's maturity in the hydrogen industry, particularly evident in Kansai. This positive outlook is reinforced by Karine Guenan, Airbus' Head of ZEROe Ecosystem, who believes that the joint efforts with Japanese entities will lead to the introduction of a hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2035.
