ASL Aviation Holdings and ZeroAvia have entered into an agreement for the installation of up to 20 hydrogen-electric engines in ASL's fleet of ATR regional turboprop aircraft, aiming to develop some of the world's first zero-emission freight aircraft on a significant scale. The firm order of 10 engines, with an option for 10 more, builds on a previous agreement between the companies. The hydrogen-electric engines operate by converting hydrogen fuel to electricity through fuel cells without combustion, leading to a drastic reduction in emissions, with only low-temperature water vapor released. This technology is estimated to decrease in-flight emissions by approximately 90%, making it a promising solution for sustainable aviation. ZeroAvia has achieved successful test flights of a 600kW system and is progressing with certification for larger systems to support ATR aircraft.
