Driving Sustainable Aviation with Innovative Fuel Solutions
Key Ideas
  • Johnson Matthey and Honeywell UOP partner to offer end-to-end solutions for alternative fuels, enhancing the development of sustainable aviation fuels.
  • The collaboration aims to reduce operating costs and speed up the implementation of projects producing fuels through Fischer-Tropsch or methanol routes.
  • The joint offering has been selected for a major SAF plant in Louisiana, showcasing the potential for significant SAF production and decarbonization in the industry.
  • The partnership also extends to hydrogen production, aiming to scale up low carbon intensity hydrogen and decarbonize existing synthesis gas plants.
Johnson Matthey plc (JM) and Honeywell UOP have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide comprehensive solutions for businesses developing alternative fuels, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). By combining JM's syngas solutions with Honeywell UOP's fuel upgrading technologies, the partnership aims to drive down costs and accelerate the deployment of projects producing fuels via Fischer-Tropsch or methanol routes. The collaboration has already been chosen for a significant SAF plant in Louisiana with a capacity of 600,000 metric tonnes per year. This initiative showcases the potential for substantial SAF production and decarbonization within the industry. Additionally, the partnership includes a focus on hydrogen production, aiming to produce low carbon intensity hydrogen at scale and integrate technologies to decarbonize synthesis gas plants. The joint efforts of JM and Honeywell UOP are expected to expand feedstock options for the aviation industry, moving towards waste biomass and municipal solid waste as sources for SAF production. This partnership demonstrates a positive step towards enhancing sustainability in aviation through innovative fuel solutions and collaborative efforts to create a more sustainable future.
