The European Commission, as represented by Mr. Tzitzikostas, discussed the recent advancements in the aviation industry towards decarbonization through the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The Commission highlighted the positive impact of regulations like ReFuelEU Aviation and financial support through the EU Emissions Trading System in stimulating the increase in biofuels production capacity in the EU. However, there is a noted lag in investments for synthetic aviation fuel production plants, crucial for achieving decarbonization goals in aviation. To address this, the Commission plans to unveil a Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP) later in 2025 to boost investments in transport decarbonization solutions, including SAF. Additionally, the European Hydrogen Bank will launch the Hydrogen Mechanism to connect stakeholders in the hydrogen sector, facilitating financing and de-risking instruments to promote the use of hydrogen and its derivatives in sectors like maritime and aviation. The Commission will also closely monitor the progress of synthetic aviation fuel projects across the EU to ensure the sector's growth. These strategic plans indicate a positive outlook on the future of sustainable aviation fuel and hydrogen investments in the EU.
