The Federal Government of Australia has initiated Round 4 of the Regional Airports Program (RAP), dedicating $25 million to fund airport projects across the country. Under this program, regional airports are eligible to apply for grants, with the possibility of receiving up to $7.5 million or 50% of the total upgrade costs. Minister Catherine King emphasized the significance of aviation in providing essential services like healthcare, education, and freight to regional communities. Eligible projects for funding include improvements to runways, drainage, lighting, fencing, navigation, and safety training. Round 4 introduces the option to utilize funding for projects facilitating the transition to net zero in aviation, such as incorporating technology like electric chargers and hydrogen fuel storage for aircraft. The program aims to enhance regional Australia by generating employment opportunities, enhancing connectivity, and delivering lasting benefits like improved access to aeromedical and emergency services. Since its inception in the 2018-19 budget year, RAP has injected $98.7 million into regional airport upgrades. The recent conclusion of the $100 million program with grants in January 2023 led to the announcement of two additional grant rounds with $40 million in funding in the 2024-25 budget. Interested parties can apply for funding through the Federal Government's business website before the deadline on 18 November.
