Holcim, Ignis P2X, and Exolum Collaborate for Eco2Fly Project in Spain
Key Ideas
  • Holcim, Ignis P2X, and Exolum are partnering to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel using captured CO2 and green hydrogen in Spain.
  • The Eco2Fly project aims to capture over 700,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from Holcim's cement plant in Toledo, with the unused CO2 being stored underground.
  • The initiative is projected to prevent emissions of over 6.5 million tonnes of CO2 in the first decade, with plans to seek funding from the EU's Innovation Funds.
  • This collaboration underscores the significance of the project in Spain's SAF production, emphasizing its scale, strategic location, and circular economy principles.
Holcim, Ignis P2X, and Exolum have joined forces for the Eco2Fly project in Spain, aiming to produce sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) by combining captured CO2 with green hydrogen. The partners plan to utilize a portion of the CO2 emissions from Holcim's cement plant in Toledo to create e-SAF. The new facility is designed to capture over 700,000 tonnes of CO2 annually during cement production, with the surplus CO2 being stored underground. By avoiding emissions of more than 6.5 million tonnes of CO2 over the first ten years of operation, the project demonstrates a significant environmental impact. Additionally, the companies intend to submit the initiative for funding from the EU's Innovation Funds to mitigate the high capital expenditure involved. José Antonio Membiela, CEO of Ignis P2X, highlighted the project's importance in Spain's SAF production, stressing its scale, strategic location, and circular economy benefits. Furthermore, recent financial support from KKR amounting to €400 million will aid in developing green hydrogen and other sustainable technology projects in Spain and beyond. This collaboration signifies a step forward in the green technology sector, with a focus on carbon capture, sustainable aviation fuel, and innovation in Spain's industrial landscape.
