Innovative Hydrogen Demo at Brussels Airport Drives Green Aviation Solutions
Key Ideas
  • WaterstofNet and VIL collaborate to demonstrate hydrogen-powered ground support equipment at Brussels Airport, marking a significant step towards greener aviation solutions.
  • The demo involves a Mulag Comet 'baggage tractor' fueled by hydrogen, showcasing the potential for hydrogen to decarbonize airport operations and contribute to sustainability.
  • The project aligns with the European Commission's aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting hydrogen as a key player in the decarbonization of aviation and airports.
  • Brussels Airport's sustainability policy encourages testing new technologies like hydrogen alongside electric vehicles, paving the way for green hydrogen production through existing infrastructure.
Brussels Airport, in collaboration with WaterstofNet and VIL, is leading the way in green aviation solutions by organizing a demo with hydrogen-powered ground support equipment (GSE). The Stargate project, involving 21 consortium partners, aims to develop innovative solutions for green airports and aviation. WaterstofNet, subcontracted by VIL, is conducting the 'airside' demonstration, which includes the use of a mobile hydrogen refueling station (HRS) provided by Air Liquide. MulagDHL, with a retrofitted Mulag Comet 'baggage tractor', is testing the efficiency of hydrogen-powered towing vehicles. The project also includes training for operators and comprehensive data monitoring for future analysis. The demo not only demonstrates the feasibility of hydrogen at airports but also aligns with the European Commission's alternative fuels infrastructure regulation to reduce emissions. The potential of hydrogen in decarbonizing aviation and airports is highlighted, with Brussels Airport's sustainability policy promoting the adoption of hydrogen technology alongside existing green initiatives like wind turbines and PV panels. The pilot aims to evaluate hydrogen as an alternative fuel for ground handling equipment and sets a model for other airports within the Stargate project, offering valuable insights into permit processes and operational experiences.
