London Gatwick is collaborating with Airbus, Easyjet, and Air Products to advance the airport's hydrogen infrastructure, primarily focusing on short and medium-haul flights. The project encompasses various aspects such as liquid hydrogen supply and storage, aircraft refueling, ground handling, and exploring immediate hydrogen utilization opportunities at Gatwick. Recognizing Gatwick as the primary operating base for Easyjet, the initiative aims to establish the airport as an ideal testbed for researching critical hydrogen flight support infrastructure. Stewart Wingate, London Gatwick's CEO, emphasizes hydrogen's potential, along with Sustainable Aviation Fuels, in decarbonizing Scope 3 emissions, especially for the airport's short-haul flights. The collaboration falls under Airbus's Hydrogen Hubs at Airports framework, which promotes expanding global hydrogen aviation infrastructure, with a goal to have a hydrogen-powered aircraft operational by 2035. Airbus's ZEROe Project, led by Glenn Llewellyn, Vice President of the ZEROe Project, is committed to achieving ambitious targets for hydrogen flight by 2035. The partnership's focus on sharing knowledge and best practices at airports is deemed crucial in building a robust global hydrogen ecosystem to support future flight.
