US-based Sea Cheetah Corporation has partnered with Toulouse-based H3 Dynamics to develop the 'world's first' hydrogen-electric wing-in-ground effect (WIGE) vessel. This innovative vessel will travel both in and out of ground effect at speeds exceeding 135 knots, connecting coastal and island regions with unprecedented speed and efficiency. Despite resembling an aircraft, the WIGE vessel will be classified and operated as a marine craft, following the guidelines set by the International Maritime Organization. The collaboration between Sea Cheetah and H3 Dynamics also includes plans to enhance the vessel's hydrogen-electric propulsion system. By deploying decentralized green hydrogen production systems named Sea Cheetah H2Hub and H2Hub Micro modules, the partners aim to support rapid refueling and vessel turnaround, ensuring the availability of green hydrogen at the point of use. This revolutionary hydrogen-electric powertrain will enable Sea Cheetah's WIGE vessels to achieve range and payload capacities previously unattainable with traditional batteries, expanding the vessels' applications across different regions. The CEO of H3 Dynamics highlighted the significant improvements in efficiency and capacity, emphasizing the vessel's ability to carry three times more payload than competitors while being ten times faster than boats and ten times more fuel efficient than aircraft. The development of the world's first hydrogen-electric WIGE vessel signifies a major milestone in the advancement of sustainable marine technology. With promises of increased speed, efficiency, and connectivity, this project offers a glimpse into a more eco-friendly and innovative future for marine transport globally.
