The UK aviation industry is moving towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 with the introduction of two key initiatives. The Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate, set to come into force in January 2025, mandates that a certain percentage of jet fuels in the UK must be sourced sustainably, with the percentage increasing over time. This initiative aims to compel fuel producers to meet sustainable aviation fuel criteria. To support this mandate, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Revenue Support Mechanism) Bill is being introduced to provide revenue certainty for SAF producers, encouraging investment in UK SAF projects. The government hopes that this bill will attract more investment, create job opportunities, and boost domestic SAF production. These initiatives are considered crucial steps in combating climate change within the aviation industry. With technologies like hydrogen and electric-powered aircraft still in the early stages of development, sustainable aviation fuel remains a key method for the industry to achieve its net zero target.
