The City of Oulu in Finland has partnered with French company Verso Energy to establish the largest hydrogen processing plant in the country. This collaboration, signed at the Northern Power forum, aims to construct a plant with a capacity of 80,000 tonnes of e-SAF and an estimated project value of €1.4 billion, which is set to create 250 jobs. The plant, located in the port area of Oulu, will bolster the city's status as a key hydrogen hub in the Nordics. Verso Energy's CEO, Antoine Huard, expressed confidence in Finland's potential for emission-free aviation fuel production and commended the successful partnership with Oulu's authorities. The initiative aligns with EU regulations mandating a 2% blend of sustainable aviation fuel at major airports, addressing the need for SAF production in Finland. The agreement also emphasizes the harmonization of Oulu's industrial areas with Verso Energy's objectives, leveraging Finland's streamlined zoning processes. The co-operation, effective until the end of 2026, focuses on defining investments and responsibilities for the project, signaling Oulu's pivotal role in the green transition. Mayor Ari Alatossava lauded the progress of the project, highlighting Oulu's contribution to sustainability and expressing gratitude to Business Finland for facilitating the partnership with Verso Energy.
