Austal Limited's division, Austal Australasia, has been awarded a contract valued between A$265 and A$275 million by Gotlandsbolaget of Sweden to construct a groundbreaking 130-meter combined cycle 'hydrogen-ready' passenger ferry. Forming part of Gotlandsbolaget's 'Horizon X' program, this high-speed ROPAX catamaran will be the largest vessel ever built by Austal and will boast a unique propulsion system incorporating both gas and steam turbines, a pioneering feature for high-speed crafts. With a capacity to carry up to 1,500 passengers, cargo, and 400 vehicles, the ferry will utilize 'green aluminum' in its construction, promoting energy-efficient processes and lower emissions. Construction is set to commence in the first half of CY2026 at Austal's Philippines shipyard, targeting completion by mid-2028. CEO Paddy Gregg expressed enthusiasm for the 'Horizon X' project, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize commercial ferry operations through a versatile fuel technology and a focus on decarbonization. Gotlandsbolaget's CEO, Håkan Johansson, highlighted the ferry's sustainability aspects, including a hydrogen-ready gas turbine system, lightweight green aluminum usage, and advanced hydrodynamic design to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The collaboration between Austal and Gotlandsbolaget began in 2023, with a shared vision to create a multifuel ferry capable of operating on various fuels, including hydrogen. The project has gained approval from DNV for compliance with gas-fuelled ship installation rules, signaling progress towards achieving climate-neutral operations. This initiative underscores the commitment of both companies to embrace green technology and lead the transition to a more sustainable maritime industry.
