DNV Introduces New Rules for Classification of Ships and Offshore Structures with Focus on Decarbonization and Safety
Key Ideas
  • DNV has updated its classification rules to support decarbonization technologies and clarify responsibilities for class customers.
  • The new in-operation class notations highlight the split of responsibilities between yards and owners/operators, promoting safety and efficiency.
  • DNV's new rules include dedicated notations for Gas fuelled hydrogen and OCCS to drive innovation and enhance sustainability in the shipping industry.
  • The Gas fuelled Hydrogen notation provides requirements for fuel systems, bunkering, and consumers, offering a practical path for hydrogen-fuelled newbuildings.
DNV has released updates to its rules for the classification of ships and offshore structures, focusing on supporting decarbonization efforts and enhancing safety in the maritime industry. The new in-operation class notations aim to provide clarity on responsibilities for class customers, distinguishing between design and operational requirements. This framework enables owners and operators to demonstrate their market differentiation through advanced procedures and reporting processes. The rules also introduce two new class notations: Gas fuelled hydrogen and OCCS (for carbon capture and storage). While hydrogen is a promising zero-carbon fuel for shipping, it is currently not covered by international regulations. The Gas fuelled Hydrogen notation outlines requirements for the ship's fuel system, bunkering connection, and consumers, offering guidance for owners looking to develop hydrogen-fuelled newbuildings. Additionally, the OCCS notation sets out frameworks and requirements for onboard carbon capture and storage systems, including exhaust pre-treatment, absorption, after-treatment systems, liquefaction, CO2 storage, and transfer ashore. These initiatives aim to reduce emissions and enhance sustainability and regulatory compliance in the shipping sector. The rules were published on July 1st and are set to be enforced from January 1st, 2025. DNV, as an independent expert in risk management and quality assurance, continues to drive innovation and safety in the maritime industry.
