India's Vizhinjam Port, located near Kovalam Beach in Kerala, achieved a significant milestone by receiving its first mothership, 'San Fernando', from Maersk on July 11. The traditional water salute and successful berthing of the vessel marked a historic moment for the port, which is operated by Adani Ports. This development catapults India into the global port business, with Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, acknowledging the achievement on social media. The official inauguration on July 12 will be attended by prominent figures including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The completion of the first phase of the port includes a 3,000-metre breakwater and an 800-metre container berth, positioning Vizhinjam as a key player in global trade routes. Under the leadership of PM Modi, India is focusing on developing transshipment hubs like Vizhinjam to prevent diversion of opportunities to other nations. Additionally, plans for the Vadhavan Port with significant capacity are underway to solidify India's position in the Maritime Sector. The Vizhinjam Port project, worth Rs 7,600 crore, is being executed by Adani Ports on a DBFOT model and will also serve as a global bunkering hub providing clean fuels like hydrogen and ammonia. The second and third phases of the project aim for completion by 2028, making Vizhinjam one of the greenest ports globally, strategically located near major international shipping routes.
