Innovative Circular Methanol and Hydrogen Plant to Transform Waste in Pavia, Italy
Key Ideas
  • The joint project aims to establish a circular methanol and hydrogen production plant at Eni's refinery in Pavia, Italy.
  • The plant will convert 200,000 tons of non-recyclable waste annually into synthesis gas, producing 110,000 tons of circular methanol and 1,500 tons of circular hydrogen while recovering 33,000 tons of inert granulate.
  • NEXTCHEM's technology will enable the production of environmentally friendly fuels and chemicals, contributing to reducing CO2 emissions from refinery processes.
  • The project is seen as a significant step towards environmental sustainability and economic growth, positioning Italian ports at the forefront of adopting eco-friendly fuels for compliance with international regulations.
MET Development (MAIRE), Eni, and Iren Ambiente have initiated the permitting process for a groundbreaking circular methanol and hydrogen production plant at Eni's refinery in Pavia, Italy. The innovative technology will allow the plant to convert non-recyclable waste into synthesis gas, which will then be utilized for producing sustainable fuels and chemicals. The plant's annual capacity includes 110,000 tons of circular methanol and 1,500 tons of circular hydrogen, alongside the recovery of 33,000 tons of inert granulate for the cement industry. Fabio Fritelli, NEXTCHEM's Managing Director, highlighted the project's dual benefits of promoting environmental sustainability and driving economic progress. The utilization of NEXTCHEM's advanced technology for engineering activities signifies a crucial step towards the execution phase of the project. Additionally, the development is expected to position Italian ports as pioneers in adopting eco-friendly fuels required by global regulations, emphasizing the positive impact on reducing CO2 emissions in refinery operations.
