CB&I, a subsidiary of McDermott, and Hanwha Ocean have received Approval in Principle from DNV for an 80,000 m3 liquid hydrogen carrier design. The AiP was formalized at the Gastech Exhibition in Houston. The design ensures compliance with safety standards, including the IGC Code and IMO's recommendations for carrying liquefied hydrogen. CB&I's cargo containment system, approved by DNV, features vacuum-insulated double-wall spheres for LH2 transport. Hanwha Ocean's expertise in gas carriers complements CB&I's storage systems, resulting in a carrier with low boil-off rates. The partnership also incorporates an eco-friendly electric propulsion system with hydrogen fuel cells. This collaboration demonstrates a joint effort to advance liquid hydrogen transportation and develop sustainable energy supply chains.
