Pioneering Green Shipping: MARIC's Ammonia Ready Bulk Carrier Receives DNV Recognition
Key Ideas
- DNV awards MARIC Approval in Principle (AiP) for a new ammonia-ready Kamsarmax bulk carrier during Singapore Maritime Week.
- The vessel design prioritizes flexibility with a shallow draft for port calls and readiness for wind-assisted propulsion systems.
- Ammonia emerges as a strong contender for climate-neutral shipping, with the first orders for ammonia-fueled vessels being placed in 2024.
- MARIC and DNV's collaboration signifies a commitment to advancing green shipping technologies and making maritime industry transitions to low-carbon futures.
During Singapore Maritime Week, DNV granted the Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) an Approval in Principle (AiP) for their innovative ammonia-ready Kamsarmax bulk carrier. This new vessel is designed with a wide beam and shallow draft to facilitate flexible port calls and is prepared for wind-assisted propulsion systems. The growing interest in green ammonia as a climate-neutral fuel for shipping, especially when derived from renewable sources, has positioned it as a viable option to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets. The ammonia-fueled ship orders placed in 2024, primarily in the bulk carrier sector, highlight ammonia's emergence as a feasible alternative fuel. The ammonia-ready Kamsarmax bulk carrier design by MARIC, featuring a reinforced hull structure and provisions for ammonia tanks and systems retrofit, is optimized for increased cargo volume while maintaining the same draft. With 4,500 cubic meters capacity tanks, the vessel can cover over 15,000 nautical miles at its design speed while running on ammonia. The collaboration between MARIC and DNV signifies a dedication to advancing green shipping technologies and accelerating the maritime industry's transition to a low-carbon future. This partnership aims to address technical and operational challenges related to ammonia as a marine fuel, providing cutting-edge solutions aligned with global decarbonization goals.
