Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful onshore supply of green hydrogen produced from offshore wind in Tokyo Bay. This achievement was part of the 'Wind Hunter Project,' a zero-emission initiative utilizing wind power and hydrogen. The green hydrogen was produced onboard the demonstration yacht 'Winz Maru' and supplied onshore in the central breakwater area of Tokyo. This marks the first instance globally where a ship has supplied green hydrogen produced while underway for use on shore. MOL conducted a demonstration test between FY2021 and FY2023 in Omura Bay, successfully completing all phases of hydrogen production, storage, and usage onboard the Winz Maru. The project involved converting the green hydrogen to methylcyclohexane (MCH) onboard to facilitate easy handling and transport. Moving forward, MOL aims to continue green hydrogen production activities, targeting production of about 100 Nm3 of hydrogen in FY2025. Additionally, the company plans to supply electricity to facilities in Tokyo Bay while exploring the development of a large demonstration vessel for the Wind Hunter project by the 2030s.
