Yanmar Accelerates Hydrogen Engine Production for Zero-Emission Ships
Key Ideas
  • Yanmar Power Technology's new hydrogen engine production plan approved by Japanese ministries under a zero-emission ships project.
  • The initiative aims to establish advanced production systems for hydrogen-fueled propulsion, targeting earlier hydrogen engine production by 2040.
  • Yanmar's goal is to achieve 100% carbon-neutral marine power products, including hydrogen engines, surpassing IMOs greenhouse gas reduction targets by 2045.
  • The company continues its commitment to eco-friendly solutions to support customers' decarbonization efforts under the YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050.
Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Yanmar Holdings in Osaka, Japan, has received approval for its new production plan focused on hydrogen-fueled engines and hydrogen fuel cell systems under Japan's Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's 'Promotion of the construction of zero-emission ships etc.' The initiative is part of the YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050, aiming to achieve a sustainable society by accelerating the production of zero-emission ships powered by hydrogen and batteries. The project seeks to reduce CO2 emissions through the adoption of hydrogen-fueled propulsion systems and enhance industrial competitiveness and economic growth. Yanmar has already introduced a hydrogen fuel cell system for marine use and completed successful tests of a pilot-ignition hydrogen 4-stroke high-speed engine for power generation in coastal vessels. With support from the Zero Emission Ship Construction Promotion Project, Yanmar plans to expedite its hydrogen engine production goals, aiming to achieve 100% carbon-neutral marine power products, including hydrogen engines, by 2045—going beyond the International Maritime Organization's greenhouse gas reduction targets. Yanmar Power Technology remains dedicated to providing eco-friendly solutions to help customers achieve their decarbonization objectives. The company's commitment to advancing hydrogen technology for zero-emission ships signifies a positive step towards a sustainable future in the maritime industry.
