Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and KPIT Technologies have announced a strategic partnership to enhance hydrogen-based mobility initiatives in Kerala, India. The collaboration, established through a Memorandum of Understanding signed during the Global Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Summit in Kochi, aims to promote the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology in public transport. This joint effort is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and includes plans to set up Hydrogen Refuelling Stations in Kochi and Trivandrum. The initiative underscores a commitment to clean and sustainable transportation, utilizing locally developed technologies to build a strong hydrogen ecosystem. BPCL will utilize a homegrown alkaline electrolyser for hydrogen production, while KPIT Technologies will contribute an indigenously designed fuel cell-powered bus for the pilot project. One of the main objectives of the collaboration is to gather essential data on the performance of fuel cell buses in Kerala's challenging climatic conditions, which include high humidity, temperature variations, and heavy rainfall.
