CityBus of Greater Lafayette in Indiana has recently been awarded a $10.5 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration to further invest in hydrogen fuel cell buses, which are a zero-emission technology. This grant comes after a previous $7.6 million grant received in June 2023. The funding will not only support the acquisition of hydrogen fuel cell buses but also cover expenses related to building a fueling station, making modifications to existing facilities, and providing workforce development to train technicians on maintaining the new technology. Bryan Walck, Manager of Customer Experience at CityBus, expressed excitement about the grant and highlighted the environmental benefits of hydrogen fuel, with its only emission being water out of the tailpipe. CityBus has a long history of embracing environmentally friendly technologies, having previously invested in hybrid electric technology and compressed natural gas. The company is now looking to transition most of its fleet to alternative fuels, with only one diesel bus remaining. CityBus aims to introduce hydrogen fuel buses by the spring of 2025, making them the first in the state to adopt this cutting-edge technology. Walck emphasized the importance of community partnership in bringing federal investment to Greater Lafayette and expressed pride in being able to lead the way in sustainable public transportation.
