Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a significant expansion in its public transport fleet with a Dh1.1 billion contract to procure 636 new buses. These buses, set to be delivered in 2024 and 2025, aim to enhance public transportation in the city. The fleet includes 40 electric buses, marking a milestone as the largest and first of their kind in the UAE. The RTA's goal is to increase the share of public transport journeys to 25% by 2030, making it the preferred mode of mobility. The new buses come equipped with advanced technology features such as the Driver Behaviour Monitoring System (Raqeeb) to improve driver conduct, Automated Passenger Counting (APC) system to track passenger numbers and fare collections, and Driver Identity Authentication for enhanced safety. These buses align with RTA's strategy to convert all public transport vehicles to zero-emission vehicles by 2050, with a focus on electric and hydrogen-powered buses. The buses cater to various passenger needs with low floors for easy access, bike racks, Wi-Fi services, and special seating, providing a comfortable and convenient travel experience. The RTA is also developing a fuel consumption testing system to compare the efficiency of different bus types. This initiative is in line with the sustainability directives of Dubai's leadership, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The expansion of the public transport fleet not only enhances mobility within the city but also contributes to reducing carbon emissions and promoting a greener environment.
