During the Sarawak Day 2024 celebration at the Old Bintulu Airport, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled the new livery design of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, known as Kuching ART, aimed at transforming Sarawak's public transport system. The design, featuring black and yellow elements, symbolizes Sarawak's culture and vision. The ART vehicles, powered by zero-emission hydrogen, are being manufactured in China for implementation in Sarawak. The Kuching ART is part of the Kuching Urban Transportation System Project (KUTS) and is set to extend to Bintulu, Tanjung Kidurong, and Samalaju. Sarawak Metro, a subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), is leading the development, operation, and maintenance of the project. The KUTS project will be implemented in phases, with Phase 1 including the Blue Line, Red Line, and Green Line covering various key locations. The Blue Line will stretch from Kota Samarahan to the city centre, while the Green Line will connect Pending to Damai. Passenger service for Phase 1 is expected to commence in stages from the fourth quarter of 2025, with completion slated for 2027. Construction of tracks, stations, and depots for the ART vehicles is in progress in Kuching and Kota Samarahan. The KUTS project emphasizes the use of green hydrogen to power the ART vehicles and feeder buses, aligning with Sarawak's dedication to decarbonisation and the advancement of the hydrogen economy. This initiative reflects the state's commitment to sustainable urban development and economic growth, setting a precedent for innovative and environmentally-friendly public transportation systems.
