MAIRE Awarded Contract for Hydrogen Production in Pengerang Biorefinery
Key Ideas
  • KT-Kinetics Technology, with NEXTCHEM's support, awarded a contract for an HPU in Pengerang Biorefinery in Malaysia.
  • The HPU will produce 38,000 normal m3ph of hydrogen for a new biorefinery in the Pengerang Integrated Complex.
  • The project aligns with MAIRE's goal of supporting the transition to low-carbon fuels and sustainable aviation fuel production.
  • The contract value is around US$125 million, and the plant is expected to be operational by 2028.
MAIRE has announced that KT-Kinetics Technology, supported by NEXTCHEM, has been awarded a contract by Pengerang Biorefinery Sdn. Bhd to provide licensing, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning services for a Hydrogen Production Unit (HPU) to be located in Johor, Malaysia. The HPU will feature NEXTCHEM's NX ReformTM technology and will be part of a new biorefinery within the Pengerang Integrated Complex, aiming to produce 38,000 normal m3ph of hydrogen required for the biorefinery's conversion processes. The biorefinery will focus on processing raw materials like used vegetable oils, animal fats, and waste from processing vegetable oils to produce sustainable aviation fuel, hydrotreated vegetable oil, and bio-naphtha. With a contract value of approximately US$125 million, the plant is set to be operational by 2028. MAIRE will employ NEXTCHEM's technology to produce low-carbon hydrogen, emphasizing circularity, efficiency, emission reduction, and resource recovery. This initiative is in line with MAIRE's strategy of aiding clients like PETRONAS and its joint ventures in transitioning to low-carbon fuels and establishing advanced sustainable aviation fuel production facilities. Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE, highlighted the significance of this achievement in reinforcing MAIRE's role in the energy transition and delivering innovative solutions to support clients in producing renewable fuels for a more sustainable future.
