Driving the Future: Hyundai and Indian Oil Collaborate for Hydrogen Study in India
Key Ideas
  • Hyundai Motor India and Indian Oil Corporation are conducting a two-year study to assess the viability and cost of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in Indian driving conditions.
  • The collaboration aims to evaluate the operational reliability, durability, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of hydrogen-powered vehicles, covering 40,000 kilometres in real-world trials.
  • Both organizations express confidence in the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable fuel source, with IndianOil highlighting its role in India's clean energy roadmap and net carbon neutrality efforts.
  • In addition to the MoU with Indian Oil, Hyundai Motor India is setting up a Hydrogen Innovation Centre with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras to support research, pilot projects, and startups in the hydrogen mobility sector.
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation to conduct a comprehensive study on the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in India. The two-year collaboration involves real-world trials of a Hyundai NEXO FCEV over 40,000 kilometres to evaluate the performance and maintenance costs under Indian driving conditions. The study also includes a Total Cost of Ownership assessment to provide insights into the economic aspects of adopting hydrogen-powered vehicles. Both Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of HMIL, and Alok Sharma, Director (R&D) of IndianOil, express optimism about the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source. They believe that fuel cell technology can play a crucial role in achieving energy security and reducing fossil fuel imports in India. The collaboration aims to showcase hydrogen as an alternative and green fuel for future mobility solutions. In addition to the joint study, Hyundai Motor India is establishing a Hydrogen Innovation Centre in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. This center will serve as a hub for research, testing, and collaboration with startups and vehicle manufacturers involved in hydrogen mobility. The initiative signifies a concerted effort towards advancing clean energy technologies and promoting sustainability in the Indian automotive sector.
