The Government of Hong Kong is intensifying its efforts towards achieving zero vehicular emissions by 2050 through the implementation of a green transformation in public transport. This initiative includes the adoption of various new energy vehicles such as electric public light buses, heavy goods vehicles, coaches, and hydrogen double-deck buses and street washing vehicles. As of May 2024, the registration numbers of new energy vehicles in Hong Kong have been steadily increasing, with over 300 electric commercial vehicles approved for trial projects. While most electric commercial vehicles have shown smooth operational results, challenges persist, particularly in the pricing of electric vehicles compared to traditional diesel vehicles. The government is encouraging vehicle suppliers to introduce more models suitable for the Hong Kong market to promote healthy competition and provide adequate charging infrastructure. Pilot schemes for electric public light buses have been launched, with ongoing data collection for performance evaluation and plans for future optimization based on operator feedback. Additionally, the government has established an Inter-departmental Working Group on Using Hydrogen as Fuel to coordinate efforts towards the local application of hydrogen energy through trial projects. Trial projects involving hydrogen fuel cells have already been initiated, exemplified by Citybus Limited's hydrogen fuel cell double-deck bus. These initiatives underscore Hong Kong's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly public transportation.
