Kerala Leads the Way: Hydrogen-Powered Bus Initiative at Cochin Airport
Key Ideas
  • EKA Mobility, VDL Groep, KPIT Technologies, and BPCL collaborate to deploy a hydrogen fuel cell bus at Cochin International Airport, marking a milestone in India's clean mobility ecosystem.
  • The initiative includes integrating hydrogen fuel cell technology, establishing hydrogen generation infrastructure, and aiming to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles in the country.
  • The project not only focuses on vehicle deployment but also on creating a complete hydrogen mobility infrastructure, positioning Kerala as a model state for green hydrogen adoption and contributing to India's net-zero goals.
  • By driving investments in green hydrogen infrastructure and shaping policies for wider deployment, the initiative strengthens Kerala's sustainable mobility landscape and supports the country's transition to clean energy solutions.
EKA Mobility, a prominent electric mobility solutions provider, has partnered with VDL Groep from the Netherlands, KPIT Technologies, and BPCL to introduce a groundbreaking initiative in Kerala, India. The collaboration aims to pioneer the use of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles in the region by deploying a hydrogen fuel cell bus at Cochin International Airport. This 30+ passenger bus, part of a Proof of Concept project with a three-year operational span, was showcased at the Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit in Kochi. The project encompasses the integration of KPIT's hydrogen fuel cell technology into EKA Mobility's electric bus, with BPCL setting up the essential hydrogen generation, dispensing, and refueling infrastructure in Kochi. This comprehensive approach not only focuses on introducing a hydrogen-powered vehicle but also on establishing a complete hydrogen mobility ecosystem. The endeavor positions Kerala as a frontrunner in green hydrogen adoption and is expected to catalyze the use of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles across India, promoting investments in green hydrogen infrastructure and influencing policy frameworks for wider implementation. Through scaling up clean energy solutions, the initiative not only enhances Kerala's sustainable mobility landscape but also contributes to India's ambitious net-zero goals, aligning with the global push towards a greener future.
