Kerala is making strides in sustainable transportation with the impending launch of its first hydrogen-fuelled bus, a joint venture between Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) and Cochin International Airport Ltd. (CIAL). The bus, powered by green hydrogen, was unveiled at the Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit in Kochi. A green hydrogen production facility and refuelling station are under construction near the airport, with 70% of the work already done. The project, set to be operational in two months, is part of a broader effort to integrate green hydrogen into Kerala's transport sector. CIAL, known for its solar-powered airport, is enhancing its sustainability drive through collaborations with BPCL. An MoU has been signed for a 1,000 KW pilot project and plans for a synthetic aviation fuel unit. This project aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and aims to test hydrogen-fuelled vehicles on designated routes, including two in Kerala. The hydrogen bus project involves EKA Mobility, KPIT Technologies, and BPCL, showcasing a commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility. The success of this initiative could pave the way for future investments in hydrogen-based transport across India, positioning Kerala as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.
