The federal government has announced a significant investment of over $123 million in transit funding for the City of Mississauga, Canada. Through the Canada Public Transit Fund and the Zero Emissions Transit Fund, this funding aims to transform Mississauga's public transit system into a more sustainable and environmentally friendly network. Part of this investment includes over $112 million in funding for MiWay, Mississauga's transit authority, over a 10-year period to upgrade and modernize public transit infrastructure. Additionally, up to $10.9 million will be allocated through the Zero Emissions Transit Fund to support the acquisition of hydrogen fuel cell buses. These buses offer a cleaner fuel alternative, emitting water and warm air instead of harmful emissions, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the city's public transit fleet. The investment will also facilitate the installation of hydrogen fueling infrastructure at the Malton Bus Depot. Mississauga will become the first municipality in Ontario to demonstrate the feasibility of using local green hydrogen as a fuel source for public transportation. Overall, this initiative not only improves public transit in Mississauga but also contributes to the development of more sustainable, transit-oriented communities and plays a role in the fight against climate change.
