Montgomery County, Maryland, in collaboration with AlphaStruxure, is undertaking a groundbreaking project to construct the largest renewable energy-powered bus depot in the United States. This innovative initiative, scheduled for completion in 2025, will introduce green hydrogen production on the East Coast for the first time. The microgrid, with a capacity of 5.65 megawatts, will feature advanced technologies like electric bus charging stations and onsite green hydrogen production driven by solar and battery energy storage systems. Notably, the microgrid can operate continuously in 'island mode,' ensuring uninterrupted operations during power outages. The depot, located at the David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operations Center, is projected to house 200 zero-emissions buses by 2035, with a significant portion being hydrogen fuel cell electric buses due to their extended range capabilities. This shift aligns with Montgomery County's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transit solutions. Juan Macias, CEO of AlphaStruxure, praised the county's commitment to zero-emissions transit and the holistic approach to bus fleet transition.
