Saudi Arabia Launches Hydrogen-Powered Taxis for Sustainable Mobility
Key Ideas
  • Saudi Arabia's Transport General Authority (TGA) initiates pilot phase integrating hydrogen taxis for sustainable urban and rural transport.
  • Memorandum of Understanding signed with industry partners AHG and Abdul Latif Jameel Motors to boost innovative transportation.
  • Hydrogen-powered vehicles offer clean, emission-free operation, boasting long range and efficiency as a viable alternative to traditional transport.
  • TGA's broader strategy includes electric buses, self-driving buses, hydrogen trains, electric cars, and hydrogen-powered trucks to enhance mobility.
Saudi Arabia's Transport General Authority (TGA) has taken a significant step towards sustainable mobility by launching a pilot phase to integrate hydrogen-powered vehicles into the private taxi sector for the first time in the Kingdom. This initiative is part of TGA's strategy to leverage advanced technologies in alignment with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy. The move aims to improve urban and rural quality of life by adopting environmentally friendly technology, reducing carbon emissions, and transitioning to clean-energy transportation. Hydrogen-powered vehicles are highlighted as environmentally friendly, sustainable, and efficient, offering clean energy and operation without noise pollution. The vehicles have a 350-kilometer range and can operate for up to eight hours a day, providing a promising alternative to traditional transportation methods. TGA has also launched initiatives involving various modern transportation models like electric buses, self-driving buses, hydrogen trains, electric cars, and hydrogen-powered trucks to enhance mobility and embrace innovation in the transport sector.
