Tamil Nadu's E-Highway Initiative: Pioneering Electric and Hydrogen Vehicles
Key Ideas
  • The Tech Trial Run III focuses on a 332 km stretch from Chennai to Trichy, incorporating electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission freight vehicles for the first time.
  • The initiative aims to evaluate the deployment of Zero-Emission Trucks (ZET), hydrogen, and electric freight vehicles to provide critical insights for stakeholders and accelerate the transition to zero-emission transportation.
  • By reducing logistics costs in India from 14 to 9 per cent, the project in Tamil Nadu targets decarbonizing the trucking industry and creating a model for other states.
  • National Highways for Electric Vehicles' efforts in Tamil Nadu are part of a broader plan to promote electric mobility and work towards achieving net zero emissions in the transportation sector.
The National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) initiated the 3rd Tech Trial Run of Electric Vehicles to upgrade five highways in Tamil Nadu into e-highways. This trial covers a 332 km stretch from Chennai to Trichy and includes electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission freight vehicles for the first time, along with electric SUVs and buses previously tested. The aim is to evaluate the deployment of Zero-Emission Trucks (ZET), hydrogen, and electric freight vehicles to gather insights for stakeholders and enable informed decisions on vehicle deployment. The project focuses on assessing the cost efficiency of electric, diesel, and hydrogen vehicles, total cost of ownership, breakeven period for investment recovery, and infrastructure upgrade costs. The Tech Trial 3 targets key routes in Tamil Nadu to determine optimal locations for charging stations and investment needed to upgrade highways into e-highways. By reducing logistics costs from 14 to 9 per cent, the project aims to decarbonize the trucking industry and transition to zero-emission trucking, with Tamil Nadu serving as a model for other states. The state's selection was based on its economic significance, particularly in logistics, automobile hub status, and numerous manufacturing units. NHEV's efforts align with the goal of promoting electric mobility and moving towards net zero emissions. By conducting technical trials and introducing electric and hydrogen vehicles, the project in Tamil Nadu sets the stage for a more sustainable transportation sector with reduced emissions and improved cost efficiencies.
