Canadian Pacific and ATCO EnPower Launch Hydrogen Pilot Programme in Calgary and Edmonton
Key Ideas
- Canadian Pacific and ATCO EnPower have completed two hydrogen production and refuelling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton.
- Each site features a 1 MW electrolyser, compression, storage, and dispensing systems, with the Calgary facility partially powered by renewable electricity.
- ATCO EnPower provided engineering, procurement, and construction services and will operate the facilities.
- The initiative aims to test hydrogen locomotives and contribute to developing a lower carbon transportation future.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City and ATCO EnPower have successfully established two hydrogen production and refuelling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton as part of a pilot programme aimed at retrofitting diesel locomotives with Ballard fuel cell power packs. The sites serve as models for future projects within Canada, featuring a 1 MW electrolyser, compression, storage, and dispensing systems. Notably, the Calgary facility utilizes renewable electricity from CPKC's 5 MW solar power facility to power the electrolyser. ATCO EnPower played a significant role in providing engineering, procurement, and construction services and will be responsible for operating the facilities. Kyle Mulligan, CPKC's Assistant Vice-President of Operations Technology, emphasized the importance of these fuelling facilities in advancing the testing of hydrogen locomotives and driving the industry towards a lower carbon transportation future. This initiative signifies a crucial step forward in the integration of sustainable solutions in the transportation sector.
