China's Leading Train Maker Drives Green Innovation with Hydrogen Technology
Key Ideas
- CRRC Corporation has achieved a major breakthrough in hydrogen technology with China's first hydrogen-powered urban train emitting only water vapor, reducing carbon emissions significantly.
- China's green goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 align with CRRC's ambitious carbon neutrality targets for operational and full value-chain by 2035 and 2050 respectively.
- In addition to energy efficiency, CRRC focuses on enhancing passenger experience by introducing green urban rail vehicles with advanced technologies like improved energy efficiency and air quality for a more comfortable and convenient ride.
- The use of hydrogen technology in rail transportation is supported by local governments like Chengdu, Foshan, Qingdao, and Changchun, who have included hydrogen applications in their Five-Year Plans, driving the country's rail industry towards sustainability and innovation.
Sun Yongcai, the chairman of CRRC Corporation Limited (CRRC), highlighted the role of low-carbon railway innovations in advancing China's sustainable development goals. In an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) in Beijing, he emphasized the significance of railway transportation in reducing carbon emissions, especially through breakthroughs in hydrogen-powered urban trains. The first hydrogen-powered urban train developed by CRRC completed successful tests at 160 km/h, emitting only water vapor and contributing to reduced carbon emissions and air pollution in urban areas. Sun also mentioned the strong policy support for hydrogen-powered rail projects in cities like Chengdu, Foshan, Qingdao, and Changchun. China's efforts to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 are driving CRRC's ambitious carbon neutrality targets for both operational and full value-chain carbon neutrality by 2035 and 2050 respectively. Besides focusing on green development, CRRC is committed to enhancing passenger experience through technological innovations, such as energy-efficient green urban rail vehicles with improved air quality and convenience features. This strategic approach aims to elevate China's rail transit manufacturing industry and promote sustainability.
