Indian Railways is forging ahead with the introduction of hydrogen-powered trains to enhance sustainable transport options. These innovative trains are being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, showcasing India's dedication to environmentally friendly transportation solutions. With a substantial allocation of Rs 2,800 crore, the Ministry of Railways is spearheading the development of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains. The debut hydrogen train, designed by retrofitting a hydrogen fuel cell onto a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit, aims to set new standards in global rail transport. This initiative, endorsed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasizes the potency of the upcoming 1,200 HP hydrogen train, surpassing many existing hydrogen trains. Anticipated to commence operations on the Jind-Sonipat route, this project is a cornerstone in India's exploration of hydrogen as a viable energy solution for railways. The meticulous planning of associated infrastructure, such as hydrogen storage and refueling facilities, underscores India's comprehensive approach to integrating hydrogen technology into its rail network. Scheduled for completion by March 2025, the hydrogen train initiative represents a significant leap forward in sustainable and eco-conscious rail transport in India.
