Indian Railways is on the brink of a monumental moment as they gear up to launch India's first hydrogen train by March 2025. The announcement, made by U Subba Rao, General Manager of the Integral Coach Factory, marks a significant leap towards sustainable transportation in the country. With an allocated budget of ₹2800 crore in the fiscal year 2023-24, the Ministry of Railways is paving the way for the development of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains, setting the stage for a cleaner and more sustainable future. The hydrogen train is expected to have a capacity of 1,200 horsepower, surpassing global benchmarks and showcasing India's dedication to innovation in the railway sector. The train will feature 8 passenger coaches, accommodating over 2,500 travelers, and 2 dedicated coaches for housing hydrogen cylinders. Operating at a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour, this eco-friendly mode of transportation is set to transform the landscape of sustainable travel in India. The train's design, meticulously crafted by the Research, Design, and Standard Organisation in Lucknow, highlights India's commitment to technological advancement and environmental consciousness. Scheduled to run on the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat section within the Northern Railway's Delhi Division, the hydrogen-powered train will serve as a beacon of India's green initiatives in the realm of transportation. Despite an initial launch date of December 2024, the debut of this groundbreaking mode of transport has been rescheduled to March 2025, symbolizing the meticulous planning and execution involved in this ambitious project.
