India is on the path to embracing hydrogen as a clean fuel for its railways, with Indian Railways spearheading a pilot project to introduce hydrogen-fuelled trains on heritage routes. This initiative marks a significant step towards achieving India's target of zero carbon emissions. The pilot project involves retrofitting existing DEMU trains with hydrogen fuel cells and developing the necessary infrastructure to support the operation of 35 hydrogen-powered trains across various heritage routes in the country. The integration process is currently underway at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, with plans to debut the first prototype on the Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana by December 2024. The 'Hydrogen for Heritage' project, with an allocated budget for both the trains and infrastructure, highlights the potential of hydrogen as a green fuel for sustainable transportation. Once operational, these hydrogen trains will traverse iconic heritage routes, showcasing a blend of modern technology and India's rich cultural heritage.
