Indian Railways is on the verge of a groundbreaking moment with the upcoming launch of its first hydrogen-powered train. This innovative pilot project is scheduled to roll out in December 2024, heralding a new era for sustainable transportation in India. The hydrogen train, running on fuel cells, will emit only water vapor, promoting a cleaner environment. It will operate quietly, offering passengers a peaceful journey with a top speed of 140 km/h and an impressive range of up to 1,000 kilometers on a single tank. The infrastructure development includes special storage facilities for water and hydrogen fuel cells to support the operation of 35 hydrogen trains across the country, each unit costing around Rs 80 crore. The initial route planned for the hydrogen train is the Jind-Sonipat line in Haryana, with potential future routes like Darjeeling and Nilgiri Mountain Railways under consideration. Indian Railways aims to significantly reduce its carbon footprint by replacing traditional diesel-powered trains with eco-friendly hydrogen trains as part of its commitment to green technology.
